UNBELIEVABLE — 259 Year Power Pole Replacement Program

March 21, 2019

In Question Time in Parliament this week it was revealed that at the current rate of replacement, country Victorians are being asked to accept that it would take approximately 259 years to replace all of the power poles across western Victoria.

Member for Polwarth, Richard Riordan MP, said this is akin to us relying on poles being erected by settlers from the First Fleet. “It’s a nonsense, its not good enough and western Victorians quite rightly feel unsafe,” he said.

“We know from the findings of the Bush Fire Royal Commission, and subsequent Grimes Review that compromised power poles can, and have started devastating bush fires in our community,” Mr Riordan said.

On the website of the leading supplier of power poles for Victoria it is stated that wooden power poles have a design life of 50 years in most environments.

“It is clear that Labor is not taking the fire risk from power poles seriously,” Mr Riordan said. “The Royal Commission into the Black Saturday Bushfires recommended the replacement of power lines. The minister has had ten years to implement a proper power pole replacement plan for western Victoria and has failed, putting lives and property at risk.

“Despite this week being the first anniversary of the St Patrick’s Day fire, in which a termite riddled power pole caused a bush fire that destroyed homes and threatened lives, Daniel Andrews is washing his hands of this massive fire risk,” Mr Riordan said.
