Western Victorian Councils called to back Princes Highway West funding

March 21, 2019

Member for Polwarth, Richard Riordan MP has today asked the Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety to match the Federal Government’s generous $80m funding pledge for upgrading major State roads in Polwarth and South West Victoria under its Roads of Strategic Importance Funding.

“Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan yesterday announced an $80m funding boost that will benefit the Princes Highway west of Colac in Polwarth,” Mr Riordan said. “Many high profile danger points on key State roads can expect to be upgraded at last, after years of neglect by the State.

“It is now imperative that mayors and Shires join with my call on the State Government to match Dan Tehan’s $80m pledge. There is much more to be done, and it’s high time the State Government allocated resources to upgrade roads for economic development and community safety for our region.

“The Princes Highway West and other key Western Victorian roads are clearly a Victorian State Government responsibility, and again we are seeing the Federal Government being left to deal with the neglect of these important conduits for agricultural products. Daniel Andrews’ State Government is underfunding country roads while spending billions in metropolitan Melbourne,” Mr Riordan said.
