Pathology Service Crisis

July 31, 2019

The shock announcement that pathology scientists will no longer be stationed at Colac Area Health by private operator Australian Clinical Laboratories will be an unfair blow to the Colac community who have worked so hard to grow and support its health service.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos must guarantee the Colac Otway community and other similar communities around Victoria that there will not be a reduction in important hospital services such as maternity services because of the rationalisation of the pathology industry.

The pathology industry has been warning the government for nearly two years that the current financial model needs support, and without a whole of service approach, closures such as Colac could be imminent across the State.

Jenny Mikakos is responsible for running our country hospitals.  Many of the services, urgent care and important tests rely on quick and immediate pathology responses and blood matching services.  Minister Mikakos needs to turn her feelings of “disappointment” in the decision to abandon pathology, into action.  She needs to pick up the phone and offer Colac Area Health the help it needs to keep its important suite of services.
