Energy supply crisisAugust 22, 2019
Member for Polwarth, Richard Riordan MP, has questioned why the Andrews Government is not acting to safeguard energy supplies for Polwarth’s homes, farms and businesses this summer.
“The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has released a report highlighting the lack of capacity in Victoria’s baseload electricity supply,” Mr Riordan said.
“It is not only a lack of investment in our traditional baseload energy generation because of the push away from coal, but our new baseload backup support generator at Mortlake will be operating well below capacity if urgent repairs are not completed following a fire earlier this year.
“This State Government has presided over the decline in power generation, and has rushed to renewables without adequate planning and infrastructure capacity in place such as high capacity baseload storage.
“As an energy superpower, Victorians have the right to a safe, reliable 21st century power supply. The lack of capacity and planning in Victoria’s energy grid is a disgrace. What is Daniel Andrews’ government going to do to ensure we can keep the lights on and important infrastructure operating over this summer? Our dairy, timber and tourism industries simply cannot operate without power,” Mr Riordan said.
